As the weather warms up and nature begins to bloom, it's the perfect time to capture the beauty of the season with a spring portrait photoshoot. From vibrant flowers to soft pastel colors, spring offers a myriad of opportunities for creative and stunning photos. In this blog post, we will explore a variety of ideas to inspire your spring portrait sessions and help you create timeless images that reflect the freshness and beauty of the season. Let's dive in and discover some wonderful ways to make your spring portraits shine!

Locations/ Backdrops

When I am planning out the location for an outdoor photoshoot during the spring I prefer to pick places that showcase the season’s beauty. I also like to make sure the location fits the aesthetic (or vibe) that my client wants before I finalize where we will be going.

Most people prefer a soft, cutesy setting for their Easter portraits. This can be easily achieved with most settings that include flowers. Whether it’s your own garden, a bigger community garden, or a flower field, the flowers make a beautiful background that just screams spring. Another cute option would be to go somewhere with a gazebo.

If you are setting up your own props you could also consider a picnic photoshoot. This would be a great option for either best friend or family photoshoots this spring!

If you prefer a more rustic aesthetic/ vibe, a nearby farm might be a great option! Whether you are just using it for a background, or actually interacting with the animals, it’s sure to be a more fun experience than a lot of other options. Another great option that feels more natural and fun would be a “spring showers” photoshoot! It doesn’t have to be raining (in fact it’s probably best if it isn’t), you can just turn on the hose and have Mom or Dad spray the water in the air while the kids run through.

For a more urban feel, consider a city street with blooming trees lining the sidewalks - or a neighborhood with charming pastel-colored houses. Another great option for people who aren’t so much into flowers is to utilize greenery and other foliage during their portraits.

Outfits

When it comes to picking your outfit for your spring photoshoot there are a couple of different things to consider. There are blog posts already on a couple of different styling tips but, if I am going to be honest, any style would work for a Spring photoshoot. I think the more important thing to consider is the color choice of your outfit. If you are doing a family shoot then you want to make sure that everyone’s outfits work together as well! Consider coordinating, rather than matching, outfits by mixing different shades within the same color palette.

Most outfits within the same color palette will look great together so I have included some of my favorite spring color palettes for 2024!

Remember, comfort is key, so make sure everyone feels confident and at ease in their chosen outfits for the pictures to truly capture the joy and warmth of the season.

Props

Sunshine's out, flowers are blooming, and it's photoshoot time! Wanna make your pics go from "meh" to "amazing"? Props are your new BFFs. They'll add a splash of color, get you those laugh-out-loud moments, and help tell the story of this awesome spring season. Here is a list of some of my favorite spring props and how you can utilize them!

Flowers

Fresh flowers are a classic spring prop and can be used in a variety of ways. You can also use fake flowers that look real like these beautiful white silk tulips. Have your subject hold a bouquet, place them in a basket or vase, or create a flower crown.

Bicycles

A bicycle leaning against a blooming tree or parked in a field of wildflowers adds a touch of whimsy and springtime energy to your photos.

Picnic basket and blanket

Utilizing props like a woven basket filled with seasonal fruits or a light blanket for a picnic setup can evoke a sense of leisure and warmth.

I highly recommend this outdoor blanket by Little Unicorn. I personally have the rugby-striped one but I think this tan one would work wonderfully with most photoshoots.

Bubbles

Bubbles are a fun and playful prop that can add a sense of joy and movement to your photos. Have the kids blow them or just set up a bubble machine to do all the work!

Light, flowing fabrics

Fabrics like tulle or chiffon can be used to create a dreamy and ethereal look. Drape them over a chair, use them as a backdrop, or have your subject twirl them around themselves.

Gardening tools

A rake, watering can, or pair of gardening gloves can add a touch of springtime activity to your photos.

I love this super cute green and copper one by Yourjoy Outdoor.
